What is Whois?
When a domain is registered, the owner’s contact info is sent to the domain registry, which manages it in the Whois database.
This process is regulated by ICANN, and all registries must follow its rules to be accredited. A Whois lookup pulls data straight from the registry for the most accurate, up-to-date info.
Whois data is mainly used to research domain availability, owner details, and expiration dates—helpful for buyers, journalists, legal teams, and network admins.
It can also be misused by spammers and scammers, so it’s smart to enable Whois privacy to protect your info.
We believe you should control how your contact info is shown, which is why we offer free, optional Whois privacy for all domains.
It hides your details to help block spam and scammers. Easily set your default privacy levels for your domains through your Dynadot account.
Frequently Asked Questions
No, you don’t need to enter new Whois info for every domain you register at Dynadot. You can create and save multiple contact records in your account and assign them during registration.
Some TLDs may have extra requirements, which you can manage in your account under "My Domains" > "TLD Settings." There, you can set default info for each TLD. Keep in mind, some TLDs automatically keep Whois info private.
Yes, you can update your Whois contact records anytime. Just log in to your Dynadot account, go to “Contact Records” under “My Domains,” and select the record you want to edit.
Changes may take a few days to appear in Whois, and for some TLDs, you’ll need to verify updates via email. For more details, check our help page.
At Dynadot, our Whois privacy will replace your personal information such as your name, phone number, physical address, and email address with our domain privacy contact information. This ensures that your information is not available for misuse by others. Through this privacy process, we filter out junk mail and spam and forward you messages which are important for you and your domain management.
We do make domain privacy optional, so if you wish to show your contact information publicly for any of your domains, you can adjust accordingly from the "My Domains" section of your account control panel. For more information, visit our help page.
It's usually recommended to keep privacy enabled, but there are cases where you might not want to. If you're selling a domain, disabling privacy can make it easier for buyers to reach you.
Alternatively, you can keep privacy on and use a "For-sale" landing page to let interested buyers contact you without exposing your personal info.
The Whois database acts as a form of regulation on the internet. Without the Whois database and contact records, there would be little accountability when it comes to publishing online content. This would result in more unethical and illegal content residing around the web. It is also important as a method to buy and sell domains , as domain investors (users who frequently buy and sell domains) use it as another tool for establishing contact and to begin negotiations.
No. Although the majority of TLDs support privacy, there are a number that do not as registries set their own rules regarding privacy.
Even with privacy enabled, a forwarding email is shown in the Whois record instead of your personal info.
This lets others reach out about your domain without seeing your real email. We forward any messages to your Dynadot account email so you don’t miss important inquiries while staying protected.
